Tooth Extraction Postoperative Instructions

To ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery, please follow these postoperative instructions carefully. If you have any concerns or questions, do not hesitate to contact our office.

Immediate Postoperative Care:

  1. Bite on Gauze:

    • Bite down gently but firmly on the gauze pad placed by your dentist for at least 30 minutes to control bleeding.
    • If bleeding persists, replace the gauze and bite down for an additional 30 minutes.
  2. Avoid Disturbing the Surgical Site:

    • Avoid touching the surgical site with your fingers or tongue.
    • Do not rinse your mouth or spit forcefully for the first 24 hours.
  3. Ice Pack Application:

    • Apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek near the extraction site for the first 24 hours to reduce swelling. Use it in intervals, 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off.
  4. Pain Management:

    • Take prescribed pain medication as directed by your dentist.
    • Over-the-counter pain relievers (as recommended) can be used for mild discomfort.

Diet and Activity:

  1. Soft Diet:

    • Stick to a soft diet for the first few days. This may include yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, and soups.
    • Avoid hot and spicy foods, as well as anything crunchy or hard.
  2. Hydration:

    • Stay well-hydrated with water. Avoid using straws for the first 24 hours, as suction can disrupt the blood clot and hinder the healing process.
  3. Rest:

    • Keep physical activity to a minimum for the first few days.
    • Avoid strenuous activities that may increase blood flow to the head.

Oral Hygiene:

  1. Gentle Rinsing:

    • After 24 hours, gently rinse your mouth with warm saltwater (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) after meals and before bed.
    • Do not use commercial mouthwashes for the first few days.
  2. Avoid Smoking:

    • Refrain from smoking, as it can delay the healing process and increase the risk of complications.

What to Watch For:

  1. Swelling and Bruising:

    • Some swelling and bruising are normal. Applying an ice pack can help minimize these effects.
    • If swelling or bruising worsens after the first few days, contact our office.
  2. Persistent Bleeding:

    • If bleeding persists or is severe, contact our office immediately.
  3. Signs of Infection:

    • Watch for signs of infection such as increased swelling, redness, or persistent fever.
